The Spa, Wellness and Beauty Industry encompasses a range of careers in fields such as hands-on therapies, management, sales, marketing and communications, and travel! Some Spa and beauty industry professionals focus on helping customers from a service (hands-on) level, while others may develop other skill sets such as teaching, marketing or account management.
The UK Spa Association (UKSA) is the Trade Association for the UK Spa industry. We bring unity and a voice to our community of members and the wider spa sector through support, education, and networking.
Our mission is to raise the awareness of our industry within schools, colleges, society and crucially at a higher government level. By connecting and empowering individuals and businesses at each stage of their development, we will continue to raise standards within our industry and help to ensure consumer confidence in the professional spa and wellness services our members provide.
My name is Zoe, and I am a level 3 distinction qualified Spa therapist/trainer working at Weavers House Spa, Lavenham.
Throughout my second year at college, Weavers’ House Spa fully supported my growth and progression. I would attend the spa regularly for industry standard in-house training and mentoring with the senior therapists, which offered me so much more knowledge to assist me with my exams. I think this played an important role with me then achieving the maximum grade for both my practical and theory exams.
Immediately upon receiving my certification I had a job waiting for me and I quickly jumped into performing treatments at one of the best spas in East Anglia, with confidence.
Since being at Weavers’ I have quickly progressed to taking on new responsibilities and within two years I have become the new In-house trainer for the Temple Spa brand. My hunger to progress and learn more was recognised and I was rewarded for my positive attitude and hard work.
I have loved every moment of studying and learning on the job. Having a place within the industry to support my studies allowed me to gain so much extra information to support my learning. Seeing who I aspired to be and learning from them; I was just in total awe.
You are taking these students at a perfect point in their career. No, they do not have the experience yet, but they are fully mouldable to provide the standard of work you offer to your clients, which will only reflect in their final exams. I like to think of it as “cutting out the middleman”. Take them at the start and influence their ability to provide an outstanding standard of work. Build their confidence, nurture them, flood them with knowledge and you will both reap the rewards.
My name is Freya Robinson and I started my apprenticeship at Rudding Park Spa when I was 16 years old, over 5 years ago. When I attended my interview, my mum came to sit with me as I was so nervous as this was my first ‘real’ job, but I shouldn’t have been worried, I was made to feel completely at ease, and I was excited at the opportunity that was potentially ahead.
Rudding Park is a Luxury, independent family run Resort, with Hotel, Golf, Holiday Park and award-winning Spa. The Spa is a massive 45,000 square feet and has over 40 team members from Hosts and Therapists to Guest Relations Manager’s and Food and Beverage assistants. I began my journey as an apprentice with the therapist team, this is where I gained my initial confidence and realised this was the industry for me. I then went on to develop my skills in Front of House roles, and also into a leadership role. I have always been keen to learn, I was driven and excited by the many opportunities that were on offer in such a varied and successful business, and I could see how others around me had progressed. I currently hold the position of Head Receptionist.
Rudding Park has offered me a wide a wide range of training opportunities such as Dale Carnegie Leadership and Management Training, First Aid at Work, Pool Responder training and Pool Plant training. I also attend training in relation to our Product Partners such as Elemis and Natura Bisse. After realising all of the opportunities on offer if I worked hard, it gave me the desire to begin my journey into Spa Management as I really enjoyed learning all there is to know about each different aspect of the business and more importantly how rewarding working with people and teams is.
My overall experience of the apprenticeship journey and beyond has been amazing. The Team at Rudding Park Spa have developed my confidence and independence, supported me when I needed guidance, caught me when I made mistakes and championed my career progression. I was really lucky to have a great manager when I first started, who is now my trusted mentor. She guided me and pushed me to be the best version of me I could be. She helped me develop life and people skills very early in my apprenticeship that help me continue to grow in my current role to this day.
My advice would be to – give time and support to your apprentice, they will give back and go on to be loyal, productive employees. I have been with Rudding Park Spa 6 years this year and my development has been a steep learning curve for me but the opportunities have opened doors and my managers now rely and place trust in me to mentor the younger team which I am very proud to say. I am excited for the future and believe we work in the best industry, with the kindest people.
